Prologue
          Manuel Cantez stood at the
wheel of the Light Star and watched
as the dark cover of clouds drew
closer, his face reflecting the
apprehension he felt deep within
the pit of his stomach.  Somehow, he felt that that this storm would be worse than any of the others he had encountered.  Maybe it was the way the wind had already increased in intensity or the way the ocean was starting to churn.  Whatever the reason, he knew he must tell Elena before it was too late.
Looking out across the rain soaked deck, Manuel sought out his wife as she clung desperately to the mast.  She was a brave woman and he hoped that she would understand.  All he wanted to do was give her the life the kind of life she so desperately wanted.
Shaking off his moment of reverie, Manuel held out a hand to Elena.  Slowly, she made her way across the slippery deck, the wind whipping the hair
from her face.  For a moment, he just held her.  Then, as the harsh elements battered the small craft, he told her of what he had planned for their future.  Of how they would live like royalty from the risk he had taken.
Lifting a gold medallion from around his neck, Manuel began to tell her his last secret, when a bolt of lightning raced through the night sky and struck the hull of the Light Star.  Instantly,  water poured through the gaping hole as Manuel fought to keep his balance on the slippery deck.  But fate was not with him this night as a huge wave slammed into the ship, sending Manuel tumbling over the edge into the darkness below.  To a place that was waiting to claim him in a lovers' embrace.  But before he was dragged down to the ocean depths, he heard his wife's scream as it echoed out over the raging sea.
